Qualifications for a Dental Assistant

qualifications for a dental assistantIn order to perform the necessary tasks in a dental office, individuals must possess the qualifications for a dental assistant. A dental office is nothing without a qualified, reliable dental assistant. Generally, assistants are responsible for aiding dentists with everyday operations and procedures. They facilitate the hygienic process by preparing instruments and prepping patients for their treatment.  In addition, dental assistants also help with a number of clerical tasks, including keeping track of the patient’s records and medical history.

Most dental assistants learn their tasks through on-the-job training; however, more and more dentists are turning towards applicants with additional qualifications. These various qualifications not only demonstrate the individual’s aptitude; it can also show their dedication and enthusiasm towards the field of dentistry. When looking for a new assistant, dentists should look for the following qualities.

Educational Qualifications for a Dental Assistant

Typically, individuals do not have to meet an educational requirement in order to become a dental assistant. However, several offices and dentists may prefer a dental assistant with a stronger educational background. To receive specialized training, a prospective dental assistant can engage in dental assistant programs offered by technical training centers, vocational schools or community colleges. These programs offer courses in radiology, general dental procedures and office administration, and take roughly one to two years to complete. In order to ensure that the dental training program is qualified, students should examine whether the course is approved by the American Dental Association.

Certification Qualifications for a Dental Assistant

In order to further their dental assistance career, individuals can choose to obtain certification. In general, dental assistants can receive certification from the Dental Assisting National Board after completing a particular test. Certain fields, such as restorative dentistry, may require assistants to obtain advanced certification. Therefore, prospective dental assistants should consider certification in their list of qualifications.

Additional Qualifications for a Dental Assistant

Beyond professional and educational requirements, the dental assistant must also possess a certain temperament in order to excel in the field of dentistry. In general, a dental assistant should be organized, able to keep track of the various instruments and dental procedures. Given the specific responsibilities of dental assistants, the individual should also enjoy working with his or her hands. Dental assistants are also emphatic and capable of putting nervous patients at ease.

What to Know Before Obtaining the Qualifications for a Dental Assistant

Dental assistants should carefully consider the requirements of their state before undergoing the lengthy procedures required to obtain advanced training, licensing or certification. Each individual state possesses their own requirements and standards for procedures. For example, certain states may require that dental assistants pass a state-approved examination, while others allow individuals to begin with little education. Therefore, prospective candidates should examine the laws of their home state before embarking in a career in dentistry. So ask yourself; do you have the qualifications for a dental assistant?
