1. Depending on the state involved, dental assistants may require licensing. They are normally qualified to take the exam once they complete training from qualified dental assisting schools. They may also be able to receive on the job training but will be limited in the tasks they can perform until they can pass the relevant exam and get licensed.
2. In some cases the assistant will also be required to take x-rays. They would need to get certification in this area.

4. There are many schools which are geared specifically towards training people to become dental assistants. The programs are normally taken in a classroom/laboratory environment and consist of 72 hours of instruction. These graduates can obtain a position relatively quickly due to their focused training.
5. Once on the job you will have the opportunity to work with many patients and learn a great deal about dentistry and patient care.

   1. Prepare a patient for treatment in the dental chair; and obtain their dental records for the Dentist.
   2. Be available to hand the instruments to the Dentist and to keep patients mouths clean and dry through suction apparatus.

   4. Prepare materials used to take impressions and restorations.
   5. If certified, take x-rays and process the films as required.
